Quatrevelo – Ondertussen in Roemenië

De plug is nu twee weken in Roemenië en daar wordt er hard aan gewerkt.
Na het in de spuitplamuur zetten en het uitschuren van de laatste voelbare deukjes is hij hoogglans zwart gespoten. Op deze kleur zie je elke oneffenheid, de zwarte lak is overgespoten met enkele lagen blanke lak zodat er voldoende dikte is om kleine oneffenheden er uit te schuren.
Twee ervaren autospuiters zijn er mee bezig.

Meanwhile in Romania

The plug is in Romania for two weeks now, where they work hard to finish it.
After spraying a filler and the sanding of the last perceptible dents it is painted gloss black. With this color you see every bump, the black paint is sprayed with several coats of clear lacquer to build up sufficient thickness to sand down small bumps.
Two experienced car-painters are working on it.

Daarna wordt hij nogmaals geschuurd tot korrel 800 maar niet meer gepolijst, de loswas houdt beter op een niet te glad oppervlak en het is makkelijker om de mal te polijsten.

It is then sanded again to 800 grit but not polished, the mold release wax sticks better on a non-smooth surface and it’s easier to polish the mold.

Dan kan de eerste deelnaad gebouwd worden, het is gelijk de moeilijkste.

Oorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling om de naad over de scherpe rand te laten lopen. Het idee daarachter was dat er een zichtbare deelnaad zou zijn die met de vorm mee zou lopen. De deelnaad zou zichtbaar blijven omdat de carrosserieën kant en klaar in de gelcoat kleur uit de mal zouden komen.
Maar ondertussen is er een wijziging in de productie methode doorgevoerd en worden alle carrosserieën na het lossen uit de mal gespoten met autolak.
De deelnaad kan nu voor het spuiten onzichtbaar worden weggewerkt en hoeft daarom niet meer over de scherpe rand te lopen. Liever niet zelfs want daar is hij juist lastiger weg te plamuren dan op het licht bollende oppervlak.

Then the first split surface can be built, it is the most difficult one.
Originally I planned to have the split run along the sharp edge. The idea was that there would be a visible seam that would match the lines in the design. The seam would remain visible because the bodies would come out of the mold already finished with a gelcoat surface.
But in the meantime the production method has changed and all bodies are sprayed with paint after being released from the mold.
The seam can now be sanded down before spraying and therefore does not need to run over the sharp edge. Preferably not because it is easier to sand down on the slightly convex surface than on a sharp edge.

De mal delen in twee verschillende kleuren gelcoat spuiten is nu niet meer mogelijk dus een tweekleurige carrosserie is moeilijker te maken maar het kan nog steeds met twee keer spuiten en afplakken.
Speciale lakken als metallic zijn nu juist weer makkelijker te realiseren.

Since it is no longer possible to spray two separate mold parts in different colors, a two-tone body is more difficult to make. But it is still possible to mask it and spray two colors.
Special paints like metallic are now easier to make.
